Whispering grass

Via Julia, from Constantly Furious, another film they don't want you to see or know about.

#trafigura - all over again

Once again, the evil law-monkeys Carter Ruck have got a media organisation - this time the mighty BBC - exactly where they want 'em, bent over and braced to squeal like a piggie.

According to the (admittedly usually execrable) New Statesman, Carter Fuck have bullied Newsnight into removing all reference to their investigation into the Trafigura story from its website.

Now, we've all talked about the Trafigura - or #trafigura as the tweetsphere calls it - scandal before, haven't we? Carter Fuck failed to gag the Grauniad over this shocking case, and there's no reason to think they won't fail again here.

They probably know that, but the authoritarian urges die hard, especially when you're being paid five hundred fucking quid an hour to indulge them.

So, here's the video Tragiura and Carter Fuck would rather you didn't see..

If you have a blog, post it there too. If not, bring all your mates round here. Tweet this URL, along with #trafigura. Let's make sure everyone sees this.

If the BBC are going to bottle out, the blogosphere will have to pick up the load.

Let's bring these sons of bitches down

Celebrated talking buttock Hazel Blears said this last year:

“"The most popular blogs are right-wing, ranging from the considered Tory views of Iain Dale, to the vicious nihilism of Guido Fawkes," she said.

But she added: "Unless and until political blogging 'adds value' to our political culture, by allowing new and disparate voices, ideas and legitimate protest and challenge, and until the mainstream media reports politics in a calmer, more responsible manner, it will continue to fuel a culture of cynicism and pessimism."

This was a classic piece of Political Class slander against New Media honesty and truth-telling, and in support of controlled and ‘responsible’ ‘reportage’, i.e., the censorship of any and every fact, experience, person, book, belief system or world event that might contradict or expose the collectivist mindset that she represents and enforces.

Let’s see what she was against and celebrate a victory for truth and freedom of speech.

According to the National Review, the Alinskyist Gramscian Marxist front ACORN has now lost so much credibility thanks to Fox-News broadcast investigations in four separate cities into its employees’ willingness to break the law in favour of a ‘pimp,’ a Congressional hopeful, a ‘prostitute,’ and the trafficking into the USA of under-aged children for prostitution, that the Congress has decided pretty much to announce that the party’s over as far as funding from, access to and co-operation with federal agencies.

Now, most Americans have never heard of Gramsci or Saul Allinsky and until Glenn Beck exposed Van Jones as the 9/11 Truther and Marxist entryists that he is, and until the blogosphere carried the story out beyond Fox News’ viewers, many of them were happy to accept the mainstream (controlled) media’s censored and whitewashed coverage of both Jones and ACORN. They’d have gone on believing these people were just regular guys, looking after the little people and the birds and the bees and letting them do their real job of being President Obama’s ideological storm troopers of the sort we know so well here in Britain - and assaulting and infiltrating the US body politic.

All that’s stopped now.

Fox - the only national US channel that allows conservative or libertarian speakers anything like fair or equal access to the TV screen compared with their liberal and socialist rivals – started the ball rolling whereby these dangerous and treasonous subversives were exposed and some of their public funding cut off.

There’s no UK equivalent of Fox News, so we’re pretty much on our own in the British Dextrosphere barring a handful of national print dailies and a couple of weeklies, but this was a big blow to our civilisation’s most serious home-grown enemies, so mark one up for the good guys.

This is exactly what freedom of speech is for.

Talk about adding value.

Coming all over Eddie Izzard

This comedy evening seems to have been a laugh-riot.

Not.

Review: The Road to Englistan @ King George’s Hall, Blackburn

Caroline Dutton

CAN laughter bridge a cultural divide?

It can, my dear, but what are the chances?

The Anglo-Asian comedy evening, part of Celebrate Blackburn, aimed to do just that – and in some ways it achieved its aim.

In some ways’?

The only problem was that the acts were very hit and miss.

Nothing odd about that, like the old joke about alternative comedy: now you laugh; now you don’t.

Compere John Cooper did a good job of keeping the audience in check

‘In check’? Stopping them throwing things? Heckling? Asking for their money back? Begging for the previous two hours of their lives back?

I’d sure like to know what she’s not writing about at this juncture.

…and ensuring the night ran smoothly, and the first two comics Darshan Sangrajka and Mani Liaqat went down fairly well.

Weren’t booed off the stage / assaulted / listened to in stony silence?

But…

But?

…the night went downhill rapidly with Aatif Nawaz, who attempted to get the mostly Muslim audience to talk about alcohol and sex – not a good move.

Okay – these are human occupations that do occur in Blackburn from time to time, though one is entirely and the other is mostly forbidden or regarded as taking men’s minds off valuable and important things, such as worshipping Allah. Perhaps he should’ve gone for the Prophet’s personal habits or something topical about the Jews?

He finished by singing a desperately awful “They stole my iPhone” to the tune of Michael Jackson’s “You Are Not Alone”.

Okay, I’ve done some stinkers myself; remember my War of the Worlds thing? Or the Gary Glitter/Kenneth Clarke spoof? Don't remind me, puh-lease.

The night continued to slide with Loughborough’s Ishi Khan-Jackson,

Now there’s a name that tells a story.

…who didn’t seem to connect, meaning laughs were few and far between.

But even ordinary club nights at WMCs get a few laughs but also a few duds so no surprises there, surely?

Thank goodness for the final act, Steve Shanyaski who stormed it.

Another one of those Andalucían Northern names.

Steve spoke about his native Stockport and the “pram army” he encounters in its uniform of velour tracksuits: “Come on Shaznay, we’ve got to get to Poundland before it shuts, we’ve got to get your grandad his 30th birthday present”.

That would be laughing at white chavs, of course.

All in all not a bad night.

Nobody died. Nobody declared fatwa on anyone. The skinheads didn’t storm in…

Talk about damning with faint praise….

What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate.

Here’s an authoritative quote about jokes and Islam from the great man himself.

Allah did not create man so that he could have fun. The aim of creation was for mankind to be put to the test through hardship and prayer. An Islamic regime must be serious in every field. There are no jokes in Islam. There is no humor in Islam. There is no fun in Islam. There can be no fun and joy in whatever is serious. Islam does not allow swimming in the sea and is opposed to radio and television serials. Islam, however, allows marksmanship, horseback riding and competition ...

So limericks are out but maybe the modern pentathlon’s in.

Now look, to be fair, this was obviously a very worthy effort at bringing a dash of humour to Blackburn’s race relations (yes, ‘race’; the kind of people who set this sort of thing up will be aware of and probably quite obsessed about race relations). They clearly wanted to emphasize the supposedly multiracial audience’s common humanity by bringing out the comedy in the meetings and otherwise between native Englishmen and their new Muslim neighbours. Obviously, someone was trying really hard to show both groups; look, we can laugh at ourselves and each other, so it doesn’t all have to be fighting and suspicion and segregation. Can’t we admit over a beer or a sherbet or something that we’re all good for a laugh underneath?

It doesn’t seem to have worked on this occasion, but then Blackburn was always a tough audience and they say Morecambe and Wise died there.

These guys give it a go too. Watch. Listen.

Hmm. Not too much victimhood there and they’re clearly trying to do something right, even if it’s not quite clear what it is.

The BBC some publicity to gives the same tour over here.

The response from the audience is overwhelmingly positive.

"Humour brings us all together," says one young woman. "It doesn't matter whether you're black, white, Muslim, Chinese, Indian. Humour is humour."

A Muslim man at the show says: "I think anything for the Muslims in the public eye is good right now especially if it is funny and it's showing people that we also have a sense of humour.

"In the jokes the comedians highlight things like stereotypes. This performs an educational function, so it's very positive," he added.

Well stereotypes are a bad thing I’m sure. I’m eagerly looking forward to the BBC’s next award-winning sitcom about some cheerful London board of directors with hearts of gold and the way they muddle along between Henley, the polo season and exporting powdered milk to the Third World. Maybe there can be a zany Israeli on it whose pride and joy is this souped-up Caterpillar earth mover with Starsky and Hutch go-faster stripes that he bought for a song when Gaza was evacuated, only he’s married to this tobacco exporter from Virginia, and she…

Tough gig.

So when some people go out of their way to confront the real and actual clash between some Muslims and some infidels, criticism isn’t always going be fair. If we believe in a multi-front war against Islamism (politically and theologically orthodox Islam obedient to what the core religious texts told the faithful to do - as distinct from what most of our neighbours do which is to ignore the nasty bits and get on with it), then comedy has got to be one front to fight them on, right?

Okay, way ahead of me there, you’ve been here before.

This is asymmetrical warfare in pretty much every field of combat.

Back to that quotation from AK himself; ‘There are no jokes in Islam. There is no humor in Islam. There is no fun in Islam.’

Totalitarianism is all about perfection – here on earth or in the next world. It doesn’t allow its leaders, its followers and the institutions that they value to be anything less than perfect: stern, whole, monolithic, united and incorruptible.

Remember the Reich Ministry for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda’s Triumph of the Willi; the weekly radio farce about a pompous but determined Gauleiter’s comic attempts to bring the Fuhrer’s wisdom to a run-down and politically-primitive backwoods Rhineland province? Or the Soviet sailors eagerly anticipating their annual leave in Archangelsk dancing and singing to that immortal show-stopper There is nothing like a tractor suspension fabricator?

I can’t imagine a Saudi or Pakistani equivalent of Taxi or Mork and Mindy in which the everyday mainstream Muslims gently and humourously accept all the not-them weirdness amongst them to live in peace despite their differences; nor any Iranian version of M*A*S*H in which compassionate and self-effacing Shiite doctors risk life and limb to treat wounded mujahedeen and the troops of the Great Satan alike.

In such Manichean ideologies there are only Good and Evil (as defined by the all-powerful authorities) and no room or need for compromising between them, nor recognition that just folks has some overall existence outside of their two-tone world.

Humour in politics can achieve a number of results.

It can alleviate the suffering of the oppressed by laughing at themselves, their suffering, and through that to criticise the oppressors.

‘Why the bicycle riders?’

‘Why the Jews?’

‘Dear Comrade Stalin:

You were right? I was wrong? This is a paradise?’

And then there’s to attack the other people up front; to humiliate and deride and to make them question the rightness of their cause in opposing you. Read any fisking anywhere or pretty much anyone I link to or who links to or follows my blog (thank you, thank you, thank you) and you’ll know it’s a fine technique.

So humour, like religious faith, music, national culture and a really good supply of weapons can be useful as self-defence against a determined enemy.

Humour also keeps our own feet on the ground. It reminds us that we, too, are fallible and imperfect and that we must recognise the humanity of our fellow men as we laugh at our own failings. No nation believing itself to be a master race could portray its direst battle for self-preservation as being won partly by the buffoons and fantasists and the crooks and adolescent dreamers of Dad’s Army. In its time before our State broadcaster was wholly owned by the cultural saboteurs, the BBC made All Gas and Gaiters and Oh Brother which laughed at and with the then-majority Anglican church and its Catholic parent. No crusading message there, no assault on otherness, but rather self-deprecation and love for the familiar and the homely.

Can’t say I’m expecting Al Jazeera’s Sunni and Shia Show anytime soon: theme song ‘I got Jew Babe.’

I think that West is best but I for one would hate a ‘comedy’ that made all or most Muslims out to be as entirely violent, intolerant and sexually screwed-up fanatics as their worst examples are.

Most importantly, humour can act as a salve for hurt.

It hurts to know that some of my neighbours on this island want to put bags over my wife and daughter’s heads – that a minority (but not a tiny one) thinks it’s okay to kill civilians elsewhere or even here and that there should be little or no fun or freedom. I don’t think they all do so because that the streets aren’t alight with Muslim against infidel violence – just too many of them are simply doing what the rest of us are doing: getting on; getting by; making a living and a life in these islands.

George Orwell said Britain was unlikely to go fascist because we’d all just laugh at Brits in jackboots.

But we can’t joke about this. Not quite. Notice that that ‘we’ includes Ben Elton and Harry Enfield so that’s a pretty bloody wide interpretation of ‘we’ if it includes me, dear reader.

We can’t joke about it – except in a single, special kind of way...

Here’s Eddie Izzard.

Yes, and the Crusades were, "We kill you in the name of Jesus!"

"Wait, we have Jesus too! He's a prophet in our religion! We kill you in the name of Jesus!"

"Do you? Well, we kill you for your dark skin, for Jesus was a white man from Oxford!"

"No, he wasn't! He was from Judea! Dark-skinned man, such as we!"

"Look, it's just we've come all this way. Would you mind awfully if we hacked you to bits? Just for the press back home."

Diverse!

After 30 years of being on the receiving end of the ignorant rudeness and drunken brutishness from native Britons in their own restaurants, Goodness Gracious Me came up with the classic Mountbatten’s Restaurant sketch as a comedic revenge for generations of Indian and Muslim waiters and chefs. I wonder how much resentment that sloughed off in laughter instead of tetchiness, lifelong grudges, and one day violence.

Humour's a safety-valve. Who'd want to block a safety valve? Insert irenic quip here.

So a Christian, a Jew and a Muslim go into a bar...

My enemy's friend of a neighbour's foe is Pyrrhus

Via Ranting Penguin, is this a win, or a defeat?

Four council workers have been sacked for sending a racist email to colleagues comparing Nazi death camps to the Israeli occupation of Palestine.
'After a full investigation, we have taken disciplinary action against a number of staff found to have sent and received highly inappropriate emails.
'Four people have been dismissed with a further five staff receiving formal written warnings.'

It's clear that some people have been circulating what I consider to be foul libels against the Israelis' defence of their civilians against terrorists.
It's no surprise either that members of the religion of peace seem to have been involved in passing these emails, though it's also likely at a formerly Labour-controlled county council that there are plenty hard-Left anti-Semites around too.

Nor do I have any trouble with people being disciplined for using emails on works time when they ought to have been working for their wages, though I think that email logs are things that management increasingly keep handy in case they need an excuse to sack someone for political deviationism, or just having a face that doesn't fit - which appears to be happening to not one but two of my friends here in the North West this week.
Bastard bureaucrats attacking my pals the other bureaucrats. I could weep. But go ahead and laugh: it's on your dime.

Gee, I hope they don't get me too.

And I have no trouble with the idea of monitoring peoples' communications in case they are involved in terrorism or other serious crimes. Not being a libertarian any more is very liberating that way.

It's just...

As I whined at the time (eventually at the end of a long rambling post with banjos in it)

Today this is ‘good power’ by my lights but next time it could be me emailing this very post home to publish it who gets investigated.

If we had honest politics in this country wherein murderous and pro-terrorist anti-Semitic Islam could be named as such, and if we could manage not to be shouted down and branded racists for mentioning the possibility that perhaps some aspects of Islam encourage violence and other brutality, then there would be little or less reason - little moral cause or justification as far as the Queen's Peace is concerned - to spy on and discipline anti-Israel posters and mailers like these people because their voices would be just a few amongst many differing and genuinely diverse opinions in a free and open debate.

Islamist violence and intimidation and roll-me-over-and-pump-me-like-a-bitch dhimmitude amongst our non-authoritative authorities have made such debate all but illegal so it just doesn't happen in the mainstream media without tons of bricks hitting the courageous commentators - Undercover Mosque anyone?.
And that's just the good side - if we assume in our low blood-sugar moments that Lancashire County Council are doing this to prevent anti-Semitic evil being encouraged.

I suspect that there will be at least some aspects of professionalism involved, what with the mailers breaching LCC's IT security system a la Pepper Potts in Iron Man; though public sector security systems have a reputation for being the anti-hacking equivalents of '
Is this trip really necessary?' posters, but mostly what happened is that a scandal hit Lancashire's County Hall and they can't cover it up.
This may be because information about it went public, and I'd bet that someone emailed this trash home and someone later complained anonymously in a similar way.

So, it's illegal to support terrorism in certain complicated ways - including saying nice things about them in some ways - but on the other hand the witch-hunter's unanswerable cry of 'racism' means that all official media and respectable society will shy away from anyone who is accused of it.

So these no-goodniks lose their livelihoods for being anti-Israel arses (their families will be thrilled) but, as the Penguin says the politico keeps his seat becasue he's privileged - and still the BBC and much of the government do not allow heterodox coverage or discussion of Islam and the Middle East for fear of threatening 'community cohesion.' So we get this crock from police via the Guardian:

Commander Shaun Sawyer told a meeting of British Muslims concerned about the danger to their communities that police were responding to the growing threat.Sawyer said of the far right:
"I fear that they will have a spectacular... they will carry out an attack that will lead to a loss of life or injury to a community somewhere. They're not choosy about which community."...

"There is an increased possibility of violence from the far right. There is a trend," said one senior source, adding that the ideology of the violent right was driven by "people who don't like immigration, people who don't like Islam. We're seeing a resurgence of anti-semitism as well."

Hat tip to Biased BBC.

Cracking political analysis from the Guardian there, by the way.
Hmm. The BNP wins 2 Euro seats in a famous peaceful victory, no actual Right-wing violence goes on, and suddenly the Met go to DefCon One against mysterious and carefully unnamed Right-wing enemies willing to blow th ewhole path to power thing for an unheard-of fascist terrorist attack. That makes sense

This attitude will cost innocent lives.
The non-terrorist majority of Muslims and everyone else are kept partly in the dark, and the real killers pass through our airports and railway stations almost at will and bearded nutcases spout their filth and encourage war against our country reported only by the Daily Mail and occasional Channel Four and Telegraph coverage...

And the Internet.

This is the pinnacle of Labour's achievement: No-Win Britain.

Sigh. It's difficult for an authoritarian Right-winger like me to work out what to do for the best, but I'm never going to get the intel I need for my unrepresentative lunatic-fringe ravings to give the respectable rest of the Right a bad name without Internet freedom.

Arse.

Perhaps to be on the safe side when I come to office I'd better bring in sweeping new State powers to punish people who argue for the banning of public dissent from debates seeking to enforce sanctions against those who disapprove of making censorship illegal.

Or vice versa.

The Gagged Civil Servant - Update

Tuesday, 7 July 2009

MySociety have checked with Lisa Greenwood to see what actually happened. The email was inadvertently sent from her work account rather than her hotmail account.

I've just had a phone chat with Lisa Greenwood, the sacked civil servant. She's explained, and even been kind enough to send me anemail that I can use as evidence. In short, what she told me happened was:

1.) She used google and ended up on Hazel Blear's page on TheyWorkForYou.com

2.) She clicked through from it to Hazel's official site

3.) She found the 'contact me' page on the official site and thenclicked on the email address, which, using a mailto: tag popped up herwork email client.

4.) She wrote and sent her fatal email, which was delivered from herDCSF email account, not her Hotmail which she'd normally use.

Here's how Lisa describes it in her own words:

"Dear Tom, I googled Hazel Blears and found the website 'they work for you' and it said to contact Hazel Blears click on the following link http://www.theyworkforyou.com/mp/hazel_blears/salford
I then clicked on her personal webpage that said 'contact me'. You will have to contact the DCFS for them to explain their interception. Many thanks Lisa Greenwood"

My guess is that the recipient – the Blears official site - decided to crush Miss Greenwood and tipped off DCSF, who held a kangaroo court and sacked her.

Utterly outrageous.

Miss Greenwood should get in touch with an employment law solicitor straight away. She should obtain full disclosure of all material relating to her dismissal including any contact made by the Blears office. I predict a minor scandal and a modest pay-off….if this is kept in the public eye. You know now….if you get in touch with a MP or minister’s office and they don’t like what you say, they will try and get you sacked.

The Guardian also covers this.

Feel the hate

Here's the brutal bastard whom our beloved Home Secretary Jacquckieiy Smith has lumped in with Islamist apologists for terrorism as not wanted in the UK.

Why not give the chap a listen - he's fun, and it's unusual to hear political commentary on the wireless that wasn't dictated to the illiterate Robert Fisk and failed camel salesperson Polly Toynbee by the angel Gabriel.
Political discussions and interviews that last more than the BBC's standard two minutes is a bit of a novelty, too...

Personally, I think it's all a bit schmaltzy: I listened for several minutes and he never encouraged anybody to kill or oppress anybody, and he only got a bit upset about all those Jews leaving Venezuela under Hugo Chavez's enlightened regime.

He did say that illegal immigrants from Third World countries carry bed-bugs or cholera, but also that
badger-headed Janet Napolitano would send the bed-bugs and cholera back.
So that's okay.

Oh, and I see that his 2-dimensional web page carries advertising - presumably to support his work...

Apologies! Tardy hat-tip to The Ranting Penguin.

And here's the excellent Front Page magazine's typically excellent article on the matter.

Anti-Savage Nation By: Jacob Laksin
FrontPageMagazine.com | Wednesday, May 06, 2009

They are the world’s most dangerous men: Samir Al-Quntar, the Lebanese terrorist who killed four Israelis, among them a four-year-old girl whose head he bashed in with the butt of his rifle; Nasr Javed, the Pakistan-based commander of terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba, a prime suspect in the November attacks in Mumbai, India, in which 173 were killed and hundreds wounded; Artur Ryno and Pavel Skachevsky, the leaders of a Russian skinhead gang that murdered at least 20 people; and then there is Michael Alan Weiner, a.k.a. Michael Savage, the right-wing radio shock jock who occasionally makes crude comments.
If the last of these names seems strangely incongruous on a list of dangerous and violent extremists, that is because the list itself is the work of Jacqui Smith, Britain’s habitually censorial Home Secretary, whose office yesterday released this roster of 22 “hate promoters” who will henceforth be banned from the UK. This list of the so-called “named and shamed” included not only the aforementioned terrorists and racist gang leaders but also the incendiary but decidedly non-violent Michael Savage, raising the question of what exactly the British authorities have achieved.
As a political gesture, the British blacklist is in equal parts ridiculous and dangerous. Whatever one’s views of Savage’s on-air antics – and he has long since apologized to the gay community for his most outrageous remark, to a caller, that he should “get AIDS and die” – by no means does he deserve to be grouped with child killers, mass-murdering terrorists, and racists. No less absurd is the premise that the genuine extremists on the list will somehow be “shamed” by their mention. More likely, previously obscure terror leaders like Nasr Javed will savor their moment of international infamy and the attendant boost to their reputation.
The more worrying aspect of the official blacklist is the explicit message that British authorities will no longer tolerate opinions with which they disagree. How else to explain the inclusion of Savage, who fits none of the definitions of violent extremism that the Home Office cites as grounds for a ban, namely support for or incitement of terrorism and criminal activity? It is true that Savage has sometimes said inflammatory things, a point he readily concedes, but the fact that he is now banned from Britain invites the uncomfortable suspicion that anyone with an opinion uncongenial to the Home Office is no longer welcome in the country.
It’s certainly not the first time that the British Home Office has given this impression. This February, Jacqui Smith triggered an international row between Britain and the Netherlands when she refused entry to Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders, deeming his anti-Islamic film Fitna so hateful that she personally issued the order to turn Wilders away – a decision in which she was enthusiastically supported by both Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Foreign Secretary David Miliband. That decision was arguably even more scandalous, since polls have shown that more than half of the British public shares Wilders’ view that Islam, as separate from Islamic terrorists, poses a threat to the West. Fortunately for the poll respondents, they were already U.K. citizens, or else they too might have been banned from the country.
The British public’s concerns point up the greatest defect of the new blacklist: It ignores the urgent sources of violent hatred and extremism that threaten the U.K. from within to focus on threats of vastly varying gravity from without. As will be old news to all save the British Home Office, these threats emanate primarily from the U.K.’s large, ill-assimilated, and increasingly militant Muslim community.
The statistics on this point are overwhelming. For instance, a February 2006 Telegraph poll found that 20 percent of British Muslims sympathized with the suicide bombers who killed 52 people in the July 7, 2005, London bombings, while 40 percent of Muslims favored the introduction of Islamic Sharia law in Britain. An April 2006 survey of Muslim attitudes by the London-based research group GfK Nop found that 78 percent of British Muslims wanted to the “punish” the Danish editors who published the cartoons of the prophet Mohammed, while 68 percent supported the arrest and prosecution of British people “who insult Islam.” Similar polls have consistently shown that significant percentages of British Muslims approve of suicide bombings on British targets, admire terrorist organizations like al-Qaeda, and deny the Holocaust. Those seeking violent threats to domestic security need not look beyond the U.K.’s borders.
The threat of Islamic radicalization is itself consequence of another crisis that British authorities have failed to address: the tide of large and uncontrolled immigration from the Muslim world. The journalist Bruce Bawer reports that Britain’s Muslim population spiked from about 82,000 in 1961 to 553,000 in 1981 to 2 million in 2000. Bawer further notes that, according to the Times of London, “the number of Muslims in the U.K. climbed by half a million between 2004 and 2008 alone – a rate of growth ten times that of the rest of that country’s population.” Meanwhile, Jacqui Smith boasts that her office is now banning as many as five – five! – people a month from entering the county. Even assuming they are more dangerous than Michael Savage, it is still doubtful that those numbers will be reassuring to anyone worried about British security.
Although the new blacklist is intended to inspire confidence in the Home Office’s ability to counter the threat of extremist violence, it actually suggests the opposite conclusion. Not only does this list skirt the pressing threat of domestic Islamic extremism, but to the extent that it punishes the holders of certain opinions, it actually encourages Islamists who see free speech as one of the many expendable features of the democratic society they oppose. Still, give the strategically misdirected authorities credit. They may have done little to make Britons safer, but at least they’ve prevented Michael Savage from taking his next vacation in London.

Jacqui Smith: a correction

I must confess that of late I have been labouring under a misapprehension and in so doing may have been leading my readers, and readers of other blogs, into error.

Whilst viewing pictures on Google of the Home Secretary, the Right Honourable Jacqui Smith MP, I had falsely conceived the notion from the variety and piquancy of her facial expressions that she appears at all times and in all moods to believe that she has recently and repeatedly been honoured by the Prime Minister with the highest tribute that a man can bestow upon a woman, but with the unusual variation that he has elected to make his entrance not into that atrium or vestibule which the Creator or Nature (depending upon one's faith in Deity or trust of natural philosophy) has designed for both the beginning and the conclusion of the generative and gestative process; but rather into the passage or vessel more naturally used for the elimination of solids. I realise now that this impression is false.

In each photograph I have viewed of late I have seen that her rich and vibrant diversity of countenance is rather the product of her warm and universal compassion, her cool intelligence and breathtaking competence, as this proves. How we are blessed.
